Thanks, Aunt Tillie. | Aunt Tillie, The more you walk the better, as long as you can handle it - physically, orthopedically, and mentally. Do what you feel like. I would urge you to stay as active as possible. This will allow you to maintain the physical function you have. And even gain some of what you've lost over time. And how do you know you are over doing it - you will start to have joint or muscle pain or lose your breath or your interest. But any form of activity, even walking across the room or down the hall with your walker will help strengthen your muscles, bones, heart, and mind. Yes, physical exercise is beneficial for both your mind and for your body. Many studies have been performed linking the two including a report in the Physician and Sports Medicine journal. Not only will increasing your present level of activity slow the aging process but it will allow you to regain some of the strength and function you've lost. One important thing to remember is that you don't gain fitness while you are moving (exercising) - rather during the period between workouts while you recover. This is assuming you get adequate rest and nutrition. But more on that later ... | | |
