Caregiving Skills and Caring for the Caregiver

Everyone can use some advice on caregiving skills.

Caregiving involves skills which can range from simple to complex.  It is only a matter of time before caregiving gets more demanding and complicated.

It is without question that we can go shopping for our loved one and clean around the house.  But what happens when we have to venture in the area of transferring them from a wheelchair to a bed and vice versa…or learning how to bathe someone that is bedridden to avoid risk of sores and infection.  These are just two simple tasks caregivers face everyday.  Unfortunately most family caregivers don’t have the proper training required for these situations.

Don’t fret; there are resources available which can help.

The American Red Cross has a training program for family caregivers that covers a wide variety of topics including and not limited to:

General Caregiving Skills

Positioning and Helping Your Loved One Move

Assisting with Personal Care

Caring for the Caregiver

Caring for a Loved One with Alzheimer’s Disease or Dementia.

Also, you should talk with a doctor, nurse, or other home health aide about any tasks that you are uncomfortable performing or find difficult to perform.  The secret here is not to go it alone.
