Edie is my first experience with caretaking. It's like being a new mother. Everyday is something new. You know the terrible 2's. Every word out of their mouth is No. Well, now we've hit the terrible 80's What are the terrible 80's? Your brain thinks you're 40 but your body says, who are you kidding. I've watched Edie over the last 4 years go from an 84 year old, who looked 70ish and walking on her own, to an 89 year old, who looks 75ish and using a Hugo for problems walking and a nurse to give her a shower and take care of her personal needs and things around the apartment. It took me a good year to finally figure out I couldn't do it alone. What makes us feel like we have to be a martyr? No one wins when you try to do it on your own. Kenny and I have introduced a lot of new things to Edie. She has sometimes kicked and screamed because, she thought, some of our improvements for her made it seem like she couldn't take care of herself. Well? Like anything else, we can get used to almost anything. She has adapted well and is happier now that many of her daily chores have been made much easier. Yea! |
