Walk on, and on, and ...

Accelerometers and pedometers do work, just with limitations.

Not so fast Mr. Impatient. Don't give up that pedometer so quickly:

While pedometers, like your bathroom scale, have limitations there are many benefits. Each gives you immediate feedback and hopefully positive motivation due to a display of changes in the correct direction.

When you told me you were having problems with your pedometers, even your more expensive accelerometer with a piezoelectric mechanism for monitoring your movement I decided to purchase one myself. I figured I could use it during my rehabilitation from my fractured pelvis and torn adductor muscles to make sure I was doing as I say and not over doing things.

Unlike you, when I first used my New Lifestyles NL2000 and walked 100 steps, and then 240 steps, it was spot on. It did take me a couple of tries to get it positioned correctly. And, yes, the protective cover is so tight and difficult to open it took me a try or two. But the display is definitely protected. I suspect that much of your problem with the pedometers is due to the protrusion of your abdomen and the vibration interference from the overlap.

One solution would be to forget the absolute number of steps you take and move it to your side (at waist level). Rather than worrying about the exact number of steps each day - compare how many more steps you take each successive day and look at your change in activity (steps) from day to day. Any tool, or toy, which entices you to do more, has got to be a benefit.

So, walk (step) on my friend, and on, and on ...
