How does a medical alarm monitor movement in the house?

Can you give us any help about in-home monitoring systems...?

Gordon and Helen asked:

I'd appreciate any help you can give us about in-home monitoring systems for my 85 year old mother-in-law.  She lives at home by herself and does okay despite the fact that she has macular degeneration and some mobility problems.

We are in contact with her daily at least but live over an hour and a half from her home.  When we met with her doctor and her yesterday, he said that some security companies have a service in which they monitor movement within the house while a person is home, compile a daily patterns history of this movement and if there is a significant change, notify the appropriate person. He thought it was offered by ADT but I found nothing on their website or any other security system companies website about such a service.

Can you point me in the right direction if there is such a product out there?

Thanks for anything you can do!

Hi Gordon and Helen,

The only monitoring of movement medical alarms can do, that I'm aware of, is to see if the person has crossed and infrared beam. If that is crossed once daily they assume the person is okay.

Personally, I find this little more than a nuisance that causes false alarms.

I would recommend our seniorsafety.com medical alarm called Get Help Now. There is no infrared, and this is what we think is best.

It's just wonderful that you keep touch daily with your mother in law, that is the best way to assess what is going on in her life, and to help keep her mentally alert.

Hope this helps,

Jeff
