Excerpt from: Tuesdays with Edie

| July 22, 2005 | | As we age, the transition from independent lifestyle to a dependent lifestyle is subtle at first, but this is how it started with Edie. |
August 2001, my husband
Kenny and I, moved his mother Edie from Philadelphia, Pa. to Marina del Rey,Ca.
That was the beginning of "Tuesdays with Edie.”
She was 85 years old in
very good health for having so many years under her belt. Unfortunately she
had lost her daughter to ovarian cancer, a husband of kidney failure, a brother
of stomach cancer, and another brother of esophageal cancer. Edie was alone in
Philadelphia and we were 3000 miles away.
Kenny and I had been
foot loose and fancy free in our first ten years of our marriage. Now we had an
aging parent that needed our help. We had a family meeting and Edie was willing
to move to be close to us. We found her a wonderful apartment, two blocks from
where we live, convenient for us and for her. Directly across the street from
her new home were two shopping centers. Great she could walk out her door and
have everything at her footstep without Kenny and me having to take her.
Little did we know she was having problems walking and was afraid to
cross the street by herself. | | |
