Aphasia does not allow her to talk coherently.

Hi Albert,

I understand from what you have asked, that your wife has Aphasia from a stroke, and that she cannot talk coherently. Her words come out all jumbled up. She even confuses yes and no questions. She is right side paralyzed and is confined to a wheelchair.

You want to know, "Do any of the medical alert systems accommodate such a person?"

My heart goes out to you Alfred, this is so difficult for you the caregiver, let alone, how tough this is for your dear wife. I hope the Aphasia your wife has is transitory. My uncle Herman had a difficult case of Aphasia.

I remember sitting in front of him with my laptop computer trying to get him to touch a yes or no large graphic image. Truly one of the most frustrating moments of my life.

The answer of whether a medical alert system can accomodate her is...yes and no.

If it is only that her words are jumbled...this presents no problem to a medical alarm monitoring center. We would just assume she is in trouble, since she can't coherently communicate, and we would send 911 to help her.

The important questions here are:

Do you believe she comprehends what you are saying?

Do you believe she will know to push the button if she needs help?

Will she push the button when she does not need help?

If she comprehends and knows when to push the button for help...yes a medical alarm system can give both of you great peace of mind.

If not she and you, will be even more frustrated when 911 arrives for no reason.

I feel for you and your wife. I hope this gives you some help in making a decision about medical alarms.
<!--
