Sometimes karma works...

Kenny says, I talk to everyone. He's right. I can't help myself. It seems I always have something to say.

When my mom was alive, I would fly back to New Jersey four times a year to visit. When Kenny would pick me up at the airport (remember the time you could meet someone at the gate?) I would get off the plane in Los Angeles saying goodbye to half the people on the plane and the crew.

Well, this leads me up to how I met Alice my angel. We work out at the same gym and have been seeing each other there, over the last year.

We chit chat about anything and everything. It makes our gym experience that much more interesting, and it goes faster.

One day we're talking and Alice tells me that since she was retired, she spends some of her time visiting a few senior citizens to help them with a meal, or just to visit now and then. No kidding.

Alice said that she and her husband Steve were always so thankful when friends of theirs would visit their parents. Now they had the time to give some of that back to others. Real people.

Kenny and I were going away on vacation in a couple of weeks. I asked Alice if I could hire her to take my mother-in-law Edie, out to lunch while we were away?

She suggested we all get together for lunch.

Two days later Edie, Alice and I were having a girl's lunch out. We all had a great time getting to know one another.

When we said goodbye, I took Edie home. Edie said she loved Alice. She's one of the nicest people she'd ever met. It was ditto for me. I enjoyed Alice's company, too.

I emailed Alice later that evening, telling her how much we enjoyed our lunch. Alice wrote back that it would be her pleasure to take Edie to lunch. In fact she wanted to take her out twice. Once alone and once with her husband Steve who was from New Jersey. Alice knew Steve and Edie would have things in common being from Philly and Jersey.

Twice. They wanted to take Edie out twice? Who were these wonderful people?

While we were away Edie had a wonderful time with Alice and Steve. They took her to their home, where they brought their dogs out to meet Edie. She loved every minute of it. And the lunches weren't bad either.

When we got home Edie couldn't stop talking about these two angels.

I emailed Alice to thank her and Steve for being so kind. It takes special people.

Kenny and I had dinner with them the following week and now we all have new friends.

Alice and Steve still make special lunch dates with Edie.

Alice and Ellen still make special dinner dates with Steve and Kenny.

Did we get lucky, or what?

Seniors, like children, have a way of making people smile.

I barged in on Kennys' date with Edie last Tuesday. I'm always invited to come along, but I enjoy my Tueday evenings with a few hours to myself.

It happens to be the Jewish New Year and since last Passover, Edie hasn't been to our house. She can't get up the steps anymore.

So we went out for dinner.

Over the last year I've been noticing more and more, how nice people are to the aging. I'm sure I'm noticing more because of Edie.

When we went to dinner last night she was treated like a queen from the moment she walked in.

She came through the door with her Hugo ( her fancy wheeled walker) and they started moving tables and chairs to open a way to the table.

Edie got alot of attention. At the age of 89, she spends alot of her time alone. It's nice to see the caring and attention she gets from people. It certainly a boost to her morale.

I must say when Edie goes out, she always has a big smile on her face and will talk to anyone who would spend time with her.

It's nice to know that people care to talk.

Take the time.

MRI suggests that an epidural shot or two might ease Edie's hip pain.

A ray of hope from the orthopedist.

Dr. Anthony's assistant called us with the results of Edie's MRI. She said the doctor felt an epidural injection may help with Edie's pain in her hip and leg.

There seems to be a disc in her back that may be the culprit.

Sometimes it takes an epidural or two to do the trick, so on Monday, Edie and I will go to the hospital where an anesthesiologist will do the injection.

I must tell you that when I told Edie this may help a ray of light shone in her eyes.

That hope is in my eyes too. Seeing her get around easier would be wonderful.

We're keeping our fingers crossed.
