Seniors need to test their medical alarm at least once a month. Or more.

<p>One of the largest problems in the medical alarm industry are seniors not testing their systems frequently.</p><p><img hspace="0" border="0" align="left" src="http://seniorsafety.com/images/medical_alert_display.jpg" alt="Medical alert system a device that call for help when you can't reach the phone to dial 911" /></p><p>Why don't they test their button that gets them help? Sometimes it's because relatives, who are well intentioned, plug the system in and test it once with their parents. Not good enough!</p><p>And don't plug it in behind furniture that they can't get behind to unplug. And make sure that everyone knows not to unplug the speaker box. Sorry to lecture you...but, you just couldn't imagine how often this problem occurs.</p><p>You must realize that sometimes it takes our parents a little time to get used to this new fangled idea of...push the button and help will talk to you through that speaker box. Seems simple to you but not necessarily to them.</p><p>Have them walk around the house with you when you test the medical alert for the first time. Then have them do the same by themselves. At least twice. Really.</p><p>The next day, call your parents and have them do a test twice again. This will train your parents to be comfortable <a href="http://seniorsafety.com/medical_alert_work.html" title="How do medical alarms work?">pushing the button to get help</a> (Senior Safety's definition of how a medical alarm should work) when they can't get to the phone to dial 911.</p><p>Call them again in a week and have them test the system one more time. Trust me, I'm a teacher, this works.</p><p>How will you feel if your mother, father, aunt, uncle or loved one...needs help, and they don't push the button? Yes I'm laying a guilt trip on you.</p><p>They should feel comfortable enough to push the button even if they have &quot;the vapors&quot;.
